Ellenbrook Middle School provided us with some unique opportunities and challenges for design in several areas including steel design and precast design. The school was also designed using a new Architectural model loading to the development of distinctive design and construction techniques.
The steel structure on several buildings was remarkably complex to incorporate raking ceilings, highline windows and operable walls while maintaining large open spaces. (Learning Community buildings and Senior Learning building)
The cafeteria building was particularly challenging in the design of precast panels. The panels involved were up to about 9m tall and required the analysis of the interactions with the steel structure and detailing to achieve a full connection between the panels and the concrete footings.
